I think it was Facebook where I learned Menards had a promotion where 5 quart jugs of Valvoline were packaged with an Action 1:64 of Paul Menard’s forthcoming retro livery for the Southern 500. So, while out and about, I hit up a Menards to find one...along with a 4-pk of Sprecher’s Root Beer.

Jug-a-lug, jug-a-lug

The livery is a tribute to Al Unser, Jr.’s sole Winston Cup start in the 1993 Daytona 500. I believe it was used to introduce Valvoline’s Synthetic line, which featured red/gray/black packaging.

I don’t remember what forced Little Al to a backup after the Twin 125s, but in the race, he ran Ken Schrader’s Kodiak backup with swapped lettering. Al was running competitively until he was squeezed by Dale Earnhardt exiting Turn 4.

It’s a pity Al never made any additional NASCAR starts, especially at the peak of his powers, as he was more than competitive against the NASCAR stars on ovals in IROC.

Anyway, if you have a Menards store near you, and you use conventional oil in your 1:1 cars, check the endcaps near the automotive section by the checkout and exit.
