It’s something of a given that if you are a sport car manufacturer, you need to be involved in racing said sports car. It was this situation that Chrysler found itself in the 90’s. There were attempts by privateers to race the 1st gen Viper, but none were successful. However, with the 2nd gen Viper, Chrysler officially got involved, along with a little help from Reynard Motorsport and ORECA Engineering, who had the task of building and maintaining the cars. The cars debuted for the 96 race season in the GT1 class, but moved to GT2 for the 97 season. It was in GT2 that they found their success, with Team ORECA winning 7 of 11 races in the FIA GT2 Championship. They built on that dominance in 1998 by winning 10 of 11. The eagle-eyes among you will note only 2 driver’s names, indicating that this is not a LeMans car, but do know that the number 51 car did compete there, where it came in 2nd in class in 1997, which is the model that AUTOart replicated. It’s a rather old model, so you get a fair amount of decals instead of pad prints, but the details are good, and the Viper can sit comfortably amongst its more contemporary peers.
