A Tale of Two Jimnys

Today we have a look at two totally new castings of a new car - and a new manufacturer of 1/64 scale models as well. Because the Jimny Sierra is the first effort by a new outfit calles “EraCar”.

I don’t know much more about them, other than that what it says on the box. Which is “A Hong Kong Design Made in China”. It also shows a not terribly informative website: www.eramyth.com

As you can see, the model itself is very pleasing, with lots of detail and a high level of finish. I paid JPY 850 for it on Yahoo Japan,

It should be noted that this is a different car than the one modelled by Tomica. The “Sierra” has the tow tone paint and black flared arches, plus all around more equipment. And - it doesn’t comply to “kei” car specs with its 1.5l engine. All export Jimnys are “Sierras”, even if they don’t carry that name.

The Tomica on the other hand is the Japan only kei-car spec Jimny, with a 650cc engine and minus the extra trim inside and out.

Ii has that super springy suspension that we all know and love, with extra wheel travel for this little 4WD! And the execution is typical Tomica, with enough detail to please the collector, without crossing into the pure collector’s item bracket. It does remain, at heart, a toy car.

With a scale of 1/57, it is also a fair bit larger and sturdier than the EraCar, and it misses the little things that could break off in the hands of a child, like the roof antenna and side mirrors.

EraCar also make the kei car version of the Jimny, and have just released four versions of the Suzuki Every. I think their deserve success, they are certainly a welcome addition to the market.
