Aaannnd we’re back, for the 4th annual Hot Wheels Advent Calendar!

This year, the amazing woman who puts this all together decided to surprise me, and order a whole bunch of older Hot Wheels off of the electronic bay dot com so that I’d have no idea at all what was coming. She’s the best.

For Day 1, we have:

The 2001 First Editions Ford Focus!

What a wild, absolutely insane cast. I had to read up on the car it was based on.

Good heavens...that wing...

So this car is based off of the 2000 Ford Focus Pro Stock, a titanium and carbon-fiber monster built by Shaun Carlson, an auto journalist-turned-drift and drag car builder. The body (not the chassis) weighed all of 35 lbs., and the turbocharged, alcohol-fueled engine made nearly 1000HP from 2 liters, good enough for 9-second quarter-mile times (and sub-9 by one website I read). Sadly, Shaun passed away in 2009 at the age of 35 due to a congenital heart defect. What a machine he produced, though...
