This is the 2003 Subaru Impreza WRC driven by the Finnish team of Tommi Mäkinen and co-driver Kaj Lindström in Rally Great Britain.

It is one of many instantly recognizable blue and yellow (day-glow green) liveried Subarus that dominated the rally circuits. What more needs to be said? You all know I’m usually light on words anyway. :-)

This model is a 1/64 diecast from CM’s Rally Subaru set. Yep, it’s 1/64!

Here’s a quick behind-the-scenes gif for you:

Here’s a little technical information on these images. I used a method called focus stacking or focus blending. I shot 4 or 5 images to get each shot. I photographed them pretty much wide-open to get a very shallow depth of field. The first shot would be focused on the nearest part of the car, then each subsequent image would be focused back until the last shot would be focused on the farthest part of the car. Then I would blend them in Photoshop with a nice automatic feature that did a pretty good job.

This method enabled me to get the entire car in focus while maintaining the shallow depth of field and that nice background blur.

The action shots required a bit of work. Make a selection of the car, copy it to a new layer, clone out the car on the background diorama layer, blur the wheels, blur the background accurately, paint in the dust and dirt and gravel, mask it out so it sits behind the car, etc. I think it was worth it though. :-)
