Folks, this is it. This is the end. The last box in this amazing collection. This collection was willed to me when the original collector passed away after a battle with cancer. Actually, the 2nd anniversary of his passing was only 10 days ago. I was tasked with finding a new home for the collection, preferably as a whole. He spent a significant portion of his life creating this unbelievable gathering of die-cast cars. I decided that, before I went through figuring out the collection’s next destination, I wanted to see what was there. During visits with him, I got to see little snippets here and there...the new acquisitions that he was proudest of...but, I never saw it as a whole until I was there with a U-haul and an SUV to pack it up. While I wanted to look through it, I also wanted to share it - after all, what’s a huge collection of anything worth if you don’t share it with others??
The first post was all the way back in December of 2016, which means it too me 13 months plus 10 days to go through this process with the whole thing. I tried to break it up into sections based arbitrarily on where the boxes were gathered in my garage. Since each post had links to every earlier post, I did this in an effort to make the that list of links too long. I feel like I started off doing a better job of putting more information in the earlier posts and it started to peeter out as similar boxes of cars kept showing up and I started to struggle with finding unique things to say about each one. But, in the end we got there! Sometimes my titles were witty....sometimes they were a stretch, but, I did my best! I’m not a professional writer after all (at least not yet!).
Anyway, here’s probably the most important statistic: the total number. Drum roll please...........................................................................14,392.
I know, what a pitiful number, right!?
Now, to anyone thinking this collection might be for them or for someone they know, I’m open to suggestions and offers, but, I am going to be keeping some of them for myself, my friends and my family. In the coming weeks I’ll be going through those to make sure I’ve not kept any duplicates and I’ll document which cars are no longer part of the main collection.
Thank you all so very much for sticking with me, for reading all these posts and for the details about some of the cars. It wasn’t a surprise, but the collective knowledge here is absolutely incredible.
Now, without further ado, here it is. The LAST box: We’ll call it Mopar Mayhem...and I’m betting you know what’s coming next...
