I can't say it enough how much I love the old Matchbox Lesney castings, they are very detailed for something that is over 50 years and they put most current Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars to shame. I acquired both of these in separate lots of cars I bought on Ebay. Both these cars had serious paint issues and both were in need of some serious restoration work. I lover Ferrari castings, I don't care who makes them, but there is something about the Ferrari Berlinetta casting that shows what a Ferrari is truly about. Since I had two of these to do I figured why not just go with the standard Ferrari Red for one of them, however I was torn on what to do for the second one. I really like the midnight blue color of the classic Ferrari's but I just wasn't feeling it. Then I remember ed a story about Steve McQueen's Ferrari 250GT Lusso on Jolopnik that posted years ago. His car had such a unique paint color that I started looking at more and more pictures of the car. I for one love the brown color of his car, it sets apart from most of the other Ferrari's out there.
With my mind made up to do his car it was time to get to work, there were several casting lines on both the front and rear quarter panel that had to be ground down, then I sanded the entire car in fine sandpaper. I then used a polishing wheel on the front and rear bumpers to give it a nice shine. All the small details including the headlights, grill, tail lights and steer wheels all got detail work done to it. For the McQueen car I had to convert the car from a left hand drive car to a right had drive car and I had to sand down the license plate in the back to make room for his personal license plate. As for the brown color it is a custom made color I made myself using Brown, Red, Gold, Black and Yellow paints, it took me almost an hour of mixing paints to get a color close to the original but it turned out at beautiful. The gold flakes in the paint really shine when the car is out in the sun. I made a decal of his original license plate and added to the back and both cars got several coats of super glossy clear coat.
As I said before Lesney made some beautiful castings that these cars show just how great they are with the right coat of paint on them.
