Big things with little cars
Big things with little cars

Yesterday, I posted the before and after pictures of my red MR2 restoration. Our friend Small Scale Sydney was quick to point out that it is supposed to be the SV3 prototype, not the MR2.

That turned out to look fantastic. Can I just point out that this is not an MR2 but the prototype SV-3?

I’m going back to pedant’s corner, thanks. ;-)

Well, he is right in a way.... Here is a picture of it with my other white car and box. It is referred to as MR2 (Prototype) on the box.

In unconventional Tomica manner, the side of the box reads “Toyota MR2" with “Prototype” in smaller black font as an afterthought.

Flip the cars over and here’s where things get interesting:

The white car was the first of the series (circa 1984) and reads Toyota SV-3. The red car was a later issue. Perhaps at that point in time the actual MR-2 had been in production. So you can see that they wiped out the original baseplate text and replaced it with new ones. But again, it’s quite strange that they flipped the text around (note where the front and back of the cars are).
