Today was a tough day to pic for. In my collection, saying 6-cylinder is basically saying 911, BMW, and GT-R. I love the 911, and it’s hard to go wrong there. Going BMW was a thought too, as I could do the whole week with just that brand. I passed on the GT-R as I figured I would bump heads with a certain GT-R fan (turns out I would have been okay). So instead I decided to go with something new. The Norev Mercedes CLS.
In this case, new applies to many things. It’s a newly released model from Norev of the newly announced (released?) W257 CLS, which features Mercedes’ new M256 inline-6 motor that has new technology in the form of an electric supercharger. The engine uses its 48V electrical system to power a supercharger that in turn is used to provide immediate boost to the engine’s turbo while exhaust pressure builds. Volvo does something similar with their engines, but their supercharger is belt driven. Unfortunately as this is a modern car, all that tech is hidden under a plastic “beauty” panel. And Norev’s lack of underhood detailing doesn’t help matters much.
As for the rest of the model, it is typical of Norev’s other offerings, but this time they even got the wheels and tires mostly right. If you listen to the podcast, you might think I’m on their payroll, but I’m a Mercedes man, and Norev is making all the Mercedes. Even without that though, the level of quality that they offer for the price is difficult to beat. Offering a good value is certainly not new, but it surely never gets old.
