My most involved custom so far!
This Matchbox “Racing Porsche 935" has been with me since I was little. I wrung every last bit of joy out of it as a child.
Very little paint left; window plastic yellowed beyond repair; axles so rusty, I couldn’t reuse them. Maybe I’m sentimental, but what better place to start?
I am really excited with how this came together. A spur-of-the-moment eBay search for “1:64 Porsche 935 decals” brought me these.
I am a fan of sports car racing, but I admit I had never heard of Rolf Stommelen (four-time Daytona 24 winner), whose #6 DRM Porsche 935 K3 these decals are meant to replicate. At least, that’s what I think... because even with the sum of human knowledge in my damn pocket, I’m having a hard time finding real photos. (This cast has got to be a Kremer K3, right?)
I just went with it, and made this up. I don’t know when, where, or IF this livery ever raced. I do know that if it did, it probably had Dunlops, not Goodyears. It probably also had all of its sponsorship decals in completely different places. Regardless, this casting from my youth has become my proudest custom achievement so far.
I was saddened to learn that Rolf Stommelen was killed in a Camel GT race at Riverside in 1983, the same year as this cast was made. Coincidental? Well yeah, of course. But still, evocative of the days where Matchbox made castings with IMSA box flares, and where men like Stommelen drove insane cars, and won.
