Here is the 1:43 Hot Wheels 1966 Shelby G.T. 350 in Candy Apple Red. The details are really pretty good for a car of this size. And Mattel actually did their homework a little bit more with this car it seems.
First off, the name is correct. In 1966, the word Mustang was dropped from the name of the car. Second is the color. Red, along with several other colors were offered in 1966. In 1965, the only color available was Wimbledon White.
Another correct detail is the rear quarter window. ‘65's had louvres, while ‘66's had plexiglass, as represented here. This example is also obviously a race-prepped car, with a roll cage, and window net. Another feature included in this example is a fire extinguisher and racing bucket seats. Hot Wheels did a great job with the interior details although the chrome shifter is a bit bright.
A distinguishing feature of the car is the fiberglass front valance that omits the heavy chrome and steel bumper. As you can see in the above photo, the hood doesn’t sit completely flush to the fenders but I think they wanted you to see the details underneath.
It’s got everything you’d expect from an HW Ford lump. A bit of blue, a bit of black and some splashes of chrome. It’s not AUTOart but then again, I scored this for a really good price from vdubyajohn, and it’s a Mustang!
One glaring issue is the glare that comes off the wheels. Sorry, that was bad. :) But honestly, they are chrome on this cast while they should be a flat grey color. I may fix that at some point, but at least they are the correct Crager style wheels.
Overall, I couldn’t beat the deal on this bad boy and being a 1966 as opposed to the constant onslaught of 1965's, I’m really happy to have this in my collection!
Thanks for looking!
