Matchbox is coming in hot to 2019 with the long-awaited return of opening parts, and in this case, an opening hood on a brand new sunshine yellow Honda S2000.
The yellow S2K is a new model, and its obvious primary trait is the opening hood. Raise the diecast hood to reveal that high-revving F series motor. The motor is rather oddly decal’d on, and have a very grainy, cheap desk printer look to them....but you can still read the VTEC rather clearly.
The casting’s proportions are good, but the wheels are bad. I know Matchbox doesn’t have a lot of premium wheel choices, so we’ll take the ah, hood, with the bad.
To be honest, this model doesn’t cut it for me. I love the opening hood, but for a $4.99 price tag, it just feels cheap. I’m a huge fan of Matchbox and have thousands in my collection, but this one misses the mark. However, there is another gem in the moving parts collection....
The ‘18 Range Rover LWB definitely makes up for the bad wheels on the S2K. This thing is close to perfect. The color. The wheels. The opening hatch — perfection. I don’t think they could have picked a better color combination. It looks the part of a real Rover you’d see parked at the local high-end mall.
But alas, all isn’t perfect. In fact, I nearly broke the hatch off trying to open in, and the hood on the Honda nearly cracks the windshield when moving it. I made a short video to show the issues, but will have to post that separate.
Overall I’m fairly pleased with the models, but due to the higher cost and cheap feeling when opened, I probably won’t be buying too many more. That is unless they look as good as that Rover....
