For my 140th post is a look back on the 3rd Car Culture release for 2016.

There is something unique when Hot Wheels started the Car Culture series as they focus each release on different themes instead of just one. Take this 3rd release which focuses on Trucks while the previous one was on European cars.

Here we have the 3/5 Subaru BRAT and the 5/5 Datsun 620, 2 of the 5 car set under the Trucks series. Of course not all the models in this series are Japanese trucks but these are my top picks.

The Datusn 620 is one of my favorite pickup as my grandma used to have one when I was growing up where it was converted into a passenger pickup with folding bench seats on each side and metal camper shell welded on the truck and high enough for me and my cousins to ride without hitting our heads when going thru potholes. I was happy when Hot Wheels first came out with this in 2014 and quickly hunted for one. What made this Datsun even better is the DISH wheels that came with this.

Since it was hard to find Zamac on mainline as they were mostly Walmart exclusive and is gobble up quickly by other collectors, I was glad that not only is the Subaru a slightly easier one to find compared to the 620 but is available in Target and Walgreen as well. The Real-Rider 8-Spoke (RR8SP) wheels compliments this 4-wheel drive as well.

Did you know that this Subaru model is an export-only and never available in Japan? Also the BRAT name was not used when exported to other countries and was known as 284 in the United Kingdom.

Ever wondered why there are welded-in rear-facing jump seats in the cargo area? These were claimed to be a tariff-avoidance ploy, with the plastic seats in the cargo bed allowing Subaru to classify the BRAT as a passenger car. Interesting.
