Wait I thought only Hot Wheels has mystery models. For my 153rd post are some previous releases by RC2 of these covered models which are probably not too mysterious to some for teutonic Tuesday.
While some of the car covers fit perfectly...
others did not.
Are you ready for the revelation?
First is the ‘64 VW type-2 pickup in matte red.
When I started collecting Johnny Lightning there weren’t a lot of new releases of this casting and not having any VW pickup collection at that time, this was the only choice if I want to pick it off the pegs. I have mixed feeling about using matte red as I like red to be glossy or candy apple red. I think if I wanted to, this has the potential for doing weathering on it.
2nd is the ‘65 VW beetle rallye.
Now JL spelled rally with an ‘E’ which makes it French I think. Being a fan of blue, I love the color and the race car or rally car look of the beetle. No bumpers and a big spoiler and exhaust pipe (which would be difficult to back up the car as you will have to give a near accurate estimate of the length of the exhaust and distance between it and the wall of a building).
3rd is the ‘66 VW Samba bus in matte black.
I was into collecting black VWs at that time so adding this samba was a no brainer. I think it also qualifies as a ‘Black Bandit’ but maybe JL does not have the rights to that name anymore as they used to be doing that series.
These 3 are release 7 under the Volkswagen theme in 2008 and included those car covers.
While I like these castings by JL, there were no opening parts and none of my VW 1/64 collections had them. This however has change when a relatively new company at that time named M2 introduced their own VW collections and included parts that open.
