Hot Sixty 4th: Teutonic Tuesday or late Murica Monday

When you rather see the item in person, you sometimes have to acquire it overseas. Here is an obscure model that is not available in the big box store in the US but somehow is available in ToysRus overseas. Here is that item on my 86th post.

Called 1959 VW Double Cab Truck USA Model by M2 and you now know the reason why it can be a Teutonic or Murica. Some people also call this the VW Double Cab Camper and I agree as it is designed for camping. This model is also one of those made for MiJo exclusive.

So who is MiJo? From their facebook it says MiJo Exclusives are a series of exclusive collectible products available through M&J Toys, a long time distributor of the biggest names in the industry. They are a wholesale online store that contracts with different manufacturers to produce specific design or colors that can be acquired online or possibly hobby shops.

And this VW design was an idea that Sean of M2 came up with. Here is an excerpt.

When I set out to design the camper I wanted to approach it as what if VW itself would have designed a camper back in the day for their double cab truck. So I used as many styling cues from VW buses I could find. The roof is very similar to the “high top” VW delivery vans.

There were only 2 varieties available so I choose this one as it still looks stock even if it was customized. When testing this I noticed that some of the wheels do not roll. Whether it is due to the design or QC quality I was slightly disappointed as this was priced higher than non-exclusives. Another disappointment was although the cab and chassis are metal, the camper itself is plastic. There were no tires or paint issues. It does not include any special features as there were no openings.

How do I feel about this model? I was initially excited to find one at that time and was thinking of whether to collect the complete set like I did (or tried) with the M2 VW double cab pickup release or just choose one. Due to the price and limited selection I only bought one and I’m glad I did. I felt after opening this, unlike the VW pickups which they released with different colors and assorted styles, this came with different colors but style remains almost the same which felt kind of boring in the end.

I recommend maybe getting only one if you really wanted to have every available assortments in your VW bus collection. But of course I don’t mind getting another one as a gift. :)
