Big things with little cars

Vdubya and I coordinated a pretty complex HWEP and I got to dig through the diecast car bin at one of my favorite junk shops yesterday. This yellow Toyota Celica GT was in the bin. It looks worse than it really is. The axles are rusted pretty hardcore and there is a good deal of dirt packed in the front. But, the rest of the car is actually really nice. It’s going to get a wheel swap and a polish. I want to keep it yellow since my parents had a Celica just like this for a couple of years.

More on my junk shop cars in a bit... Let’s talk about this awesome HAWL with Vdubya.

I am working on a custom project dedicated to my wife. Hunting for the perfect wheels for the project has been a mission. When I put a plea on LaLD for a specific style of wheel Vdubya stepped up to the plate and offered Manx Buggies that fit the bill perfectly. But, hey, we couldn’t just keep the trade at that. Right? I’ve been longing for the JL AMC Rebels for a while. I rarely get a chance to visit TRU. Thank you so much for hunting these down.

Since I started doing diecast customs, I am finding more and more that Racing Champions are an unsung hero in quality casts. Once you strip away the crazy thick paint and often-atrocious decals/tampos, the casts themselves are really nice and details with minimal mold lines. I am hunting for these more often now. This bugs bunny van it epic. Once I get this down to bare metal, I think this will be one of my favorite upcoming custom projects.

I picked out a couple of other cars that I wanted to pillage for parts, but I couldn’t find anything really decent to offer for trade. So, I told John I didn’t need them. To my surprise, he threw them in anyways! Muchos Gracias!

He also tossed in another car I was interested in... This fantastic Phantom Corsair. A stunning car that Hotwheels has put numerous bizzare paintjobs on. I am considering stripping this car down and giving it the straight black paintjob like the 1:1. Even with the silly hotwheels paintjob, it still looks pretty fantastic.

Roll Patrol? LOLWUT?

Thanks again VWJohn! I am super happy to have all of these casts and I hope to do a full DLM review of the AMC cars. The wheels on the manxes are perfect. Cheers!

Moving onto Junk Shop finds (.25 cents each)... I snagged another Yatming Van. Except this one has a metal base (nice!) and a curious note on the bottom of it. Under the Yatming stamp is “Universal Studios” So, I think this particular van is a replica from a movie/tv show. Not entirely sure though. The Civic is toast (parts fodder). The red McDonalds/HW cart car is parts fodder as well (nice wheels for a Alfa Romero project). 3rd Gen RX7 is delicious. I could not pass that up. Bizarre Orange ‘vette is bizarre. The Siku Audi is the first I have seen in the wild. It’s not in the best of shape and the Electric company Chevy Tahoe is mainly for parts as well. The Celica and RX7 were my main scores. The rest I just picked up because they were cheap parts to add to my bin.
