Day two, another Porsche that’s not really a Porsche. Technically it’s two Porsches. RUF, the masterminds behind the legendary Yellowbird, built the insane CTR3. Out front, it’s a 997 911. In the back it’s a 987 Cayman. It is the mid-engined 911 Turbo you’ve always dreamed of.
RUF completely designed the body themselves, but opted for a mid-ship engine layout instead of the traditional rear-engined Porsche pedigree. Twin-turbochargers boost the 3.7L flat-six to just a tad under 700 horsepower. It is basically a street-legal rocketship that looks like a 911 until it blitzes past you.
This model I’ve selected for the 2000's day of Car Week is a resin model from Spark. Yes, it is sealed, but holy crap this is a grail piece! The liquid silver paint gloriously highlights all of the RUF’s body lines, and I just love the aggressive front spoiler on this thing with razor sharp angles to swallow air like a whale about to feast.
The five spoke wheels are iconic RUF design , and the bright red calipers lurking behind them really pop when this red background I’m experimenting with. The rear of the car is loaded with vents to cool the mid-mounted engined, the massive brakes, and two interesting vents over the rear wheel arches. The taillights and lip spoiler do not remind me of a kitted up Porsche at all, which is a good thing.
While the hunt for this one took a long time, I finally locked it down for the best deal I had seen, so you can imagine how ecstatic I was when the mailman delivered it to my doorstep. I have a feeling we’re going to see a number of Spark models this week, both big and small, and there is a good reason for that. The hunt begins for their new RUF CTR 2017 model, which I definitely need to pair this with guy and my GT Spirit OG Yellowbird. Now who do I know that in the model biz that might be able to hook me up...
