This was part of the Gone Fishing set from Johnny Lightning that included a boat and trailer. The boat and trailer are floating around with the rest of the Hot Wheels cars in a bin somewhere, as the real attraction of this set is the 1981 Wagoneer.

The only real world Wagoneer story I have is when I almost bought one. Back when I had my RX8, I debated between getting winter tires for the Mazda, or getting a beater/winter car. I set the filter on CL for anything above $500 and below $1k. Buried in the listings was a Wagoneer of similar vintage to this die cast and in immaculate condition for $900. I called the guy and set up a time to check it out. When it was time to head out, I grabbed the check book and was on my way to buy a Wagoneer.

When I arrived, it was at least as nice as it was in pictures. It was a one owner, under 100k mile vehicle, they bought it to use only in the winter as transportation to the ski slopes. Rust free, started easily, and ran great. Then came the flaw in my plan, I asked if a check was ok. The response was no. I asked if he’d hold it, with a written check as the deposit while I went to the bank. Again, I was told no. It took me about 20 minute to go to the bank and back, in which time, it sold and had been picked up by the next person. I was devastated, and eventually simply bought winter tires for the RX8.

PS, this diecast would like a lot better without the giant plastic hitch on the back!
