I picked up this Racing Champions 1:24 Richard Petty 1970 Plymouth Superbird about 20 years ago at TRU (RIP). The detail and quality of it is pretty amazing, when you factor in the fact that brand new, it was only $10. The thing is HEAVY, and rolls really well.
A few years ago, to keep my then 2-year old daughter from messing with my nice cars in my office, I put this and a few other cheap 1:24 scale models on a pressed steel Nylint car carrier on the floor of my office, and let her play with those. They were basically the rodeo clowns for the rest of my collection. After a while, she asked me, “Daddy, can Mr. The King be mine?” My heart melted, and I said yes.
Mr. The King has led a much rougher life since then, but I must say he has held up remarkably well. A little rash on the leading edge of the roof, are really the only scars he bears from all the racing, smashing and crashing that have since ensued.
He ended up on our front porch a few months ago, where he remains on standby for whenever the girls are playing out there. I decided to take advantage of one of my favorite natural light laden photo spots, on top of a column base on the porch.
