Big things with little cars

LaLD Car Week: Guten Abend, Herr Chancellor.

I’m sorry, BlueMazda2, but it appears your Mercedes is missing a few cylinders.

This is an entry that’s a little out of the ordinary, as it’s in fact a 1/24 scale model, rather than the 1/18, 1/43, and 1/64s I’ve been trying to collect recently. I bought it believing it was a 1/43 as the eBay seller had it listed as such, but I was surprised to find the scale was not as I expected when I opened the box. But, instead of throwing down negative feedback and requesting a return, I examined the details and found that there’s a lot to love here.

This is a Mercedes-Benz 600SEL made by German-based company Schabak. Schabak is a company that I don’t see covered often on diecast blogs and other websites of the sort, so I felt like it was a bit of a mixed bag in terms of what I could expect when I bought it. However, for a 1/24, I was surprised to find a mixture of great quality and detailing unlike any other I’d owned in the past. Everything from the correct badging to the woodgrain on the dashboard is represented in breathtaking accuracy.

So, if you’re some strange individual looking for a W140 chassis S-Class in 1/24 scale, Schabak has you covered. Apparently they do indeed make a 1/43 scale version as well, including some other great 1990s Mercedes models, but I think I’m content with my little 600SEL.
