I have a bit of a confession to the good people of LaLD. I’ve been holding out on you. While I primarily collect 1:64/3" cars, and that’s mostly all I’ve shown you, I do have a small collection of high end 1:24 and 1:18 race cars. This here is one of my best, a 1:18 of Big Daddy Don Garlits’ Swamp Rat 1.

This model is made by GMP, and my wife purchased it for me directly from Big Daddy’s Museum of Drag Racing. My parents drove my past the museum in Ocala, FL on the way back and forth from Clearwater more times than I can count, but I never could convince them to stop.

Oh, back to the model. The tires are nice soft rubber, and the front wheels are actually wire spoke wheels. The paint job is really nice, there’s really nothing on this model that bothers me or looks out of place. Everything looks ... right.

The details on this bad boy are impeccable. From the cloth seat belts, to the rubber fuel lines, the the working steering linkage, this thing is seriously impressive.

If you’re wondering why I picked this car for wacky Wednesday, look closely in front of the seat, under the steering wheel. You know, where the driver’s crotch is. Keen eyes will spot the rear end pumpkin. Now just what to you think happened if/when that rear end kersploded? Wacky I tells you! These guys were freaking bonkers!

So there you have it, one of my finest high end large scale models. I promise I’ll show you more of them :)
