Day two and I’m showing yet another purpose-built rally super star. This time its the Lancia Statos in 1:18 scale from SunStar. 6 cylinders of Ferrari fury and a shape you’ll never forget.
The Bertone-designed wedge was built with only one goal in mind: to dominate rally racing. They met that goal pretty easily too, winning the championship titles in 1974, 75, and 76. The car also won the Monte Carlo Rally from ‘75 ot ‘77. There was even a Group 5 car with a turbo and fancy body work that ran in the ‘76 Le Mans. The Statos continued to win races all the way through 1981, despite Fiat pulling is support and restrictive regulations limiting power.
Both the road and race cars wore Ferrari’s 2.4L Dino V6, although the road cars were tuned to a more reasonable 190hp. Still, the road car could sprint to 60 in just under 7 seconds.
This SunStar model features an opening back hatch, with real rubber tie-downs, that hides that Dino V6. As impressive as the engine compartment is, we are let down by the mis-aligned, painted on gas caps.
Otherwise, the model has several high-end features that you wouldn’t expect at this price point. These include pop-up headlights and a fully carpeted interior, just to name a few.
Yes, the fit and finish could be better, if you remember from my 2015 LaLD Review. My model also has a wonky stance to it, something I could probably fix if I took the car apart.
All in all, its one of my favorite pieces. It was also a birthday gift from my wife, so its got a lot of sentimental value! Kyosho also made a 1:18 Stratos, but this one looks good on my shelf and I won’t be replacing it any time soon.
