Land of the Rising Sun-Day: Toyota Crown Public Highway Co Patrol Car

Today we’ll have a look at a special edition Tomica. This car is a model of the S110 Crown, as made from 1979 to 1983. The original Tomica model was produced during the same period, but the casting has seen many re-issues as special editions.

It’s been popular as a Taxi, Police car, Fire Chief car - and this - throughout the years. This is in the colors of the “Japan Public Highway Corporation”. This corporation was founded in 1956 to build and maintain Japan’s Highway system.

The uneven surface gives the famous Tomica suspension something to work with

These car patrol those Highways, and remove any stranded or pranged cars that obstruct the flow of traffic. Interestingly, we have copied that system here recently, if only for our Toll roads.

As you can probably see, the paint and tampo job is of a higher quality than that of a regular Tomica - despite being “only” a Made in China version.

These special versions were often sold as “Exclusives” in various Japanese department stores. In this case, it is an Apita Special model. I’ve been starting to get a few through the Japanese Yahoo auctions, as they are a bit bit cheaper than on the bay. So you will probably see a few more in the future.

Enjoy what’s left of your weekend!
