Had to take my boys to the clinic today (yay for kids who share germs!), so afterwards we stopped at Big Lots to see what there was to see and to get the boys some cars (more on that in another post), since they did such a good job being poked and prodded and throat swabbed. Grabbed myself this Mega Bloks 24 Ours, since it's a HW fantasy car that I actually like (turns out it's based on a real life LeMans racer, so there's that).
Pretty quick build (60 pieces). A couple big pieces give the car most of its shape. I thought it be fun to grab one of the HW 24 Ours that I have and compare it to the Mega Bloks version.
The main thing that jumped out at me, even before I found the HW in the closet is that the Mega Bloks car just feels too narrow. It's about 8 studs wide, but could really use 2 more. Once I got the HW out to compare, some more discrepancies came to light.
From this view, you can really see how Mega Bloks truncated the nose.
Somewhere in the transition from diecast to bricks, it lost a pair of cylinders.
It got a driver, though.
The back view really shows the differences in proportions. I like the rear diffuser on the Mega Bloks, though.
Hey, the front/rear wheel proportions are about right, though.
Also, the Mega Bloks car has headlights like the HW card art, but not the actual HW car.
So overall, the resemblance to the HW car is kind of less than I would expect given the big custom pieces that Mega Bloks use, but for $8, I'm not really complaining. Hopefully having it on my desk will keep the kids distracted from some of my more cherished diecast.
Also got a Twinduction for my daughter. It looks like this.
