A few months ago androoo posted about the Tomica Subaru 22B. In his post androoo mentions that the Tomica casting is nicely detailed, but really falls short with the wheels.
I couldn’t agree more. The wheels just didn’t suit the car at all.
As a big fan of Subarus, I knew I needed this casting, ugly wheels and all.
A bit of back story. On December 17th, 2014, I lost my cherished 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS in a roll-over accident.
Anyway, I wanted to pay tribute to the car I miss the most with this casting. There is no U.S. spec 2.5 RS coupe casting that I am aware of. There are as many differences between the RS and the 22B as there are similarities.
The rear wing was removed. The wing is rubber and sits in a deep rectangular opening in the trunk. The hole was filled with JB Weld and sanded smooth. I sourced a rear wing from a Hot Wheels Mitsubishi Evo X (I know, sacrilege!) As the RS coupe has a much lower wing than the 22B. The wing was removed via a Dremel cut off wheel. Then the wing was cut in half because it was too wide for the trunk lid. A few millimeters were removed from the center of the wing and then the two halves were JB Welded together.
Next was the interior. The 22B has blue in the center section of its black seats. It is also RHD whereas the RS has charcoal and black seats and is LHD. I mixed black and grey paint to get a reasonable tone to cover the blue. The steering wheel was cut and reattached on the left. The gage cluster was sanded smooth and another was produced on the left. Then the dash and center console were painted charcoal grey.
The wheels were replaced by Hot Wheels black mesh real riders.
The body was then painted Sedona red pearl from a spray can of touch-up paint I still had from the old RS. The paint was then sealed with a gloss clear.
Detailing was done with Testors paints and a fine Sharpie.
Overall, I’m pleased with how it turned out. I wish I had androo’s ability at taking pictures because my shots don’t do the color justice.
