It all started, many, many, years ago.......
I have this random memory of going into a boutique like store, sometime in the mid to late 80's maybe like Spencer gifts, probably in a mall. I distinctly recall it was not a toy store. I saw this black ‘57 Chevy R/C car up on a shelf and it had a wire front bumper. At the time, I had a Sears/ JRL red ‘57 Chevy so I had no reason to ask my parents for this one plus it was black and not red. If you need an explanation on the color please see my original post.
Fast forward about 10+ years and now it’s around 2000 and I discovered eBay and had started using it to buy ‘57 Chevy models. Also, for some reason, when I first started using eBay, I was more obsessed with getting a good deal rather than buying something in good condition....who knows why. Well, I found one of these cars and bought it. I don’t think it even came with the remote, one of the front wheels had small pin holes in it, I think the chrome was broken etc, etc. I didn’t really have any plan for it, just that I wanted it. Eventually it got discarded and I didn’t think much of it......
This time fast-forward closer to 20yrs, now it’s December 2018 and I’m back on eBay buying more ‘57 Chevys when I see it.......a RED one. I didn’t even know they existed in red!! I looked at it, then thought, wait it’s just a toy, where would I put it, etc, etc. It was over $100 and I hesitated, went back to it a few times then.....then.....it was GONE!!!! It was a Buy It Now auction and I think it was only up there a few minutes at best!!! I was flabbergasted.....what just happened here? And it was the perfect one of course. The seller had claimed that he had bought or was given two as a kid and this was the one in the closet that had never been used. Still Mint In Box!!!
I spent the next few days, leading into weeks, scouring the internet and searching every auction site and all used item sites I could find for one......NOTHING!!!! Just using Google images I could hardly even find a picture of a red one, besides that completed auction......Below is a screenshot I took of that very auction, since even a picture of a red Shinsei R/C ‘57 Chevy is so rare, and they disappear off eBay these days after 2 to 3 months!!
Being on the rebound from this great loss, I bought a few more R/C ‘57 models that I probably shouldn’t have, but we all have our own ways of coping with loss. I ended up buying another, or rather a few of the Sears/ JRL one I did have as a kid plus a few other R/C ‘57 Chevys. But I wanted THAT one!!! A red Shinsei R/C ‘57 Chevy.
I think everyone of my close friends new about the one that got away, I was clearly obsessed. I hesitated, why, WHY had I hesitated and why did it bother me so badly? And the part that KILLED me the most was that it didn’t matter how much money I was now willing to spend on one, it simply was not available, PERIOD!!! I was just sooooo very frustrated.
I tried Craig’s List and used one of those apps that let’s you search country wide and only the black version was available. I tried to buy one and it got sold out from underneath me, besides it being black......
I ended up making a few different saved searches on eBay that would alert me via e-mail every morning with anything new. I tried all the different terms I could think of. Still nothing......now when I say nothing I was focused on a red one. I even found a VERY rare, mint in box, red ‘63 Corvette that I bought off eBay thinking at least I would have a working chassis for when one did show up. I think I paid about the same as what was being asked for the red ‘57 that got away.
After a month or so I decided on a new plan, I would buy a black one and paint it red or pay someone else to. For some reason after I decided this, it took me another 2 months to find a decent black one with a decent body and chrome pieces. Finally I bought one and it did come with the original box but it appeared that the very last time it was run was through the MUD! YUCK!! Also, it had been used so it did have some roll over damage along the roof and on one of the door handles. This was most definitely NOT MIB. I bought the paint at a local hobby shop to start painting it myself. But because I really suck at painting bodies, I thought better of it and found some nice guy off eBay that agreed to paint it for me along with a bunch of others we can touch on in a later post. So I disassembled the car, took off all the chrome and stickers. It was VERY difficult to remove those stickers and it took quite a while. Next I removed all the modeling lines as best as I could with sand papers, a hobby knife, and various files.
My painter had some issues getting the paint to stick and ended up having to repaint it several times. He informed me that he was losing some of the detail so I better had buy another one encase this one didn’t turn out so well. Luckily, I was able to locate one in better shape than the first, on Facebook marketplace with the help of a friend since I don’t do Facebook.
Here’s a pic below of a stock one and my newly painted, but not assembled, red and white one. Of course the red one needs to have all the molding chrome foiled, and then stickers will need to be made or purchased etc.
So this is all done and finished right? I have a red one now, another one I can strip and send out to be painted as well....everything is right with the world, the disturbance in the force has been fixed?
Well.......of course not, I still really wanted a red one. So I would still use the recent search function on my eBay app look for one everyday. I’d say at least 4 or 5 times a day I would search.....it only takes a sec or two, what’s the big deal....it’s not like I was obsessed or anything.......
After 6+ LONG months finally, another red one showed up on eBay last week!!! I was in disbelief. Not some crappy broken one, missing parts, but a mint red one just like in the auction I missed all the way back in December. It’s buy it now price was double, yes DOUBLE what the original one was back in December.....but it had a best offer as well. I offered $50 less and let it sit for a few minutes. Then I looked and saw there were already two people watching it..........WHAT WAS I DOING? Was I hesitating again so that I would lose out on this one too?
So I figured for a measly extra $50 more than my initial offer I just freak’n bought the thing for the full buy it now price and here it is below!!
My future plans for it have not yet been decided since I did pay handsomely for it!!! At least I will detail the grille, and chrome around the windows the side moldings. Just not too sure about painting the roof white or removing the flame stickers.....did I also forget to mention there really is NO room for hardly any of my R/C ‘57s in my dedicated 57 Chevy room!!!
