Big things with little cars
Big things with little cars

Recently, I believe someone posted a photo of a car missing a rhinestone headlight, or maybe they mentioned it, I really don’t remember.
But it occurred to me, they sell all kinds of rhinestone stickers for cell phones, different colors, different sizes, etc.
I think these cell phone *bling* stick-ons would be a great substitute for any rhinestone headlights missing in action. (They have a ton of them on that online retail site named after a river in Brazil...)
While I’m on the subject of re-purposing items for diecast, I was recently looking for some thin plastic to use in building up some parts for a custom I’m planning, and I couldn’t find what I was looking for in any of the “usual” places. I went to art supply stores, crafts stores, even hobby lobby. The closest anyone could offer was sheets of plexiglass, which were too thick, and way to big.
So I started thinking of other items that might substitute for what I was looking for, and I realized that switch plates for light switches would work perfectly.

I was going to a walmart anyway, so I looked, and found a blank switch plate for 47 cents. A nice smooth piece of plastic that I can cut into shapes, and even heat with a blow dryer or in an oven to bend into other shapes I currently need.
I’ve been looking for this for some time now, but I was focused on looking for a specific “thing” that I thought I’d find in a hobby or art supply store.
If you have found a relatively common object that you’ve used in a custom or just to replace or scratch build a piece, please leave a comment and tell us what it was you needed and what unlikely item fit the bill. We’ve already seen the suggestion of using plastic from soda bottles for windshields. What else have you got?

Maybe we can get enough ideas together for a LaLD 101 Customizing post!
