Big things with little cars

I mentioned in my earlier HAWL post that I was leaving out a car to post about later. Well, this is that car: a Lego (yes, that Lego!) Volkswagen Karmann Ghia in 1/87 scale.

You may or may not know that Lego produced licensed HO scale models decades ago. It’s understandable if you didn’t. The models were produced from the mid-’50s up to 1970, so they are quite old. They’re not much more than a footnote to us toy car guys and gals and they’re certainly not terribly desirable to the typical contemporary Lego nut, so they tend to stay under the radar. I don’t know a whole lot about them myself, but there is an excellent thread about them over at eurobricks.

The Karmann Ghia is supposed to have jeweled headlights which this example is unfortunately missing. Other than that, it is in pretty nice shape.

I’m actually a big fan of the Lego brand myself; I had lots as a kid and still buy the occasional kit. I had been looking for one of these (any of the HO models, not just a Karmann Ghia) at a reasonable price for a while, so I’m pretty excited about finally adding one. Hopefully it’s not the last!
