A different kind of AMG.
Its one of the most capable off road production vehicle with nearly 40 years of history. Originally designed for the military with solid axles front and rear, low range gearbox and three locking differentials. It has come along way from something simple fitted with a tiny diesel engine to now chrome trimmed, leather wrapped, and powerful hand crafted engine equipped machine.
Most customers unfortunately, won’t care about its history and off road capabilities. Most care more about how the G-Wagen make them look when they prowl the streets of Beverly Hills, which is the same story for the Range Rovers.
I hate the current target market for the G-Wagen. The market where customers that buys this military proven off roader that can conquer just about anything to conquer speed bumps at the local mall. However, we do owe these customers some gratitude. Because without them, the G-Wagen would’ve been retired for good. Mercedes was ready to pull the plug on the G-Wagen but with steady demand for this dinosaur, Mercedes was convinced to keep it alive and even make a complete redesign that was just unveiled yesterday.
The first thing I was worried about originally on Majorette’s take of the G-Wagen was scale. I like many, am flexible on castings that are slightly off from true 1/64. With Majorette its a gamble for me since most Majorettes are in the 1/50 range. But they did pretty good with this one, the scale is at 1/61 which is within my acceptable range. Majorette offers this casting with 8 colors so far with 5 of them part of a special pack and even a special Brabus version in Dubai Police livery. The casting also got working suspension and plastic headlights like all Majorettes as well as an opening hood which receives disapproval by some for creating a large panel gap. Tampos could use more work as a few are missing such the DRLs and turn signals. Despite all the faults on this casting, as I mentioned in my previous post, this is by far my favorite Majorette casting. It’ll be some time until Majorette come up with something that will dethrone this crown (perhaps a 6x6, which is still a G-Wagen).
That’s all for now. Until next time. Cheers.
