Now here’s two cars that have absolutely nothing in common, except that they are rag tops Made in Germany.

In the blue corner, we have the VW “Type 34” Karmann-Ghia. Based on the Type 3 platform, it was the most expensive and luxurious car in the VW line-up. It cost as much as two VW Beetles - a lot for a car that still had the same drive-train as the Type 3. It might have been luxurious for its day, but it certainly wasn’t fast.

Curiously, Matchbox chose to model the convertible version, which was never put into production. Only 17 convertible prototypes were made by Karmann before the decision was made not to go ahead. It seems quite a few more have been converted since.

Only about 42,000 Type 34s were made between 1961 and 1969, before the car was replaced by the VW-Porsche 914.

In the white corner we have the Wiesmann Roadster by Siku. Wiesmann made these BMW powered coupes and roadsters until 2014, when the company went belly up under some mysterious circumstances.

Somehow they look more like a modern Austin Healey than a German sports car - but it certainly is a looker. Jobjoris had warned me about the windscreen going all “speedster” in a hurry - and mine did just that, straight out of the package. Shouldn’t be a hard fix though.
