Big things with little cars

Teutonic Tuesday: OMG, AMG!

The last of my 1/18's to show. This is none other than the Maisto 1/18 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT.

I think I’ve shown this one before in one of my older posts, but never in depth. Nonetheless, it’s again a $13 model that I picked up at Costco, and for a while last year, I kept seeing others post theirs on LaLD. It’s no surprise why this model is so popular; Maisto knocked it out of the park. Other than a few minor gripes, this one can be considered one of its best.

If you’ve checked your Instagram lately, you’ve seen that I have already posted a few pictures of it there, so this post may be repetitive. To the rest of you, put this on your wish list now! Even at full retail price, which should be around $30, it’s worth it. I also believe there’s a “premium” version of this model in red, and that one is probably in the $40-50 range. From the pictures I’ve seen, this “basic” one is good enough.

It’s not 100% perfect, and I don’t expected budget models to be. For one, I’m not exactly happy with the wheel choice. I don’t ever remember seeing this wheel design in any of the AMG GT’s I’ve seen before, and I don’t think it’s good-looking either. Second, something’s not right with the way the front wheels fill the fenders. The saggy Maisto suspension, which I did my best to conceal, doesn’t help it either.

Still, there’s a lot of things to like here. I especially think the rear is the most well-done part of the car. The taillights look incredibly realistic and there’s a deployable rear spoiler for those who appreciate wings on everything, myself included.

The detail on the brake rotors is very minimal, and honestly kind of cheap-looking, but that seems to be a common theme with Maisto. However, panel gaps are kept to a minimum. I’ve heard many people say that they would prefer this over a high-end version such as a Minichamps.

In summary, great model of a great car. Go get it (if you haven’t already)!
