Awhile back I talked about a Fastlane 3-pack containing a VW bus, a new beetle and a BMW X5.

At the time, I was pretty adamant that I didn’t like the new beetle, the casting just wasn’t doing anything for me and the wheels were not helping in the slightest. But over time, it began to grow on me. Couldn’t really say why, but it did.

But while not displeasing, it still didn’t do quite enough. A few months later I spotted this on the shelf.

Produced by siku, this set contains a new beetle done up in yellow and a trailer with yellow trim to match, and it is surprisingly a lot nicer than I had expected.

The beetle itself is pretty nifty with the addition of rubber tyers and as a whole feels much nicer than the Fastlane model, but the real winner of this set has to be the trailer.

It’s really dense, surprisingly so, in the package, the set as a whole feels like a fairly average weight, but when you take it out, the trailer is pretty much a solid chunk of metal and it is glorious.

The trailer attaches to the car via an oddly shaped tow hitch that kinda sandwiches the car’s end into place allowing it to move on a type of detachable hinge. I’ll add pics of this later.

All in all, this is one set that really helped me to see some of the charm in the new beetle, this along with the tomica setagaya “used gum” variant of the new beetle, oh what I would give for that...
