They say this is the one that started it all. The first car to be tooled for Mattel’s new toy car line “Hot Wheels”.

The 1968 Camaro is iconic in its design and reputation as a racer. Even today the first generation Camaros draw a crowd on the street, at the drag stip, or even at a road course.

The Hot Wheels versions were produced in both the US and Hong Kong. It’s the Camaro casting’s variations that set it apart from the 15 other original releases.

The Camaros were painted in every possible color, some had black painted roofs, others did not. Glass and interior color also varied. The rear panel of the cars were either painted body color or flat black. Chassis detail also varied. All these indications lead experts to agree that the Custom Camaro most likely served as an early test bed for different ideas and manufacturing processes.
