Many car enthusiasts seem to love arguing over one critical question: what’s the best front-engine V8 rear wheel drive two seater on the market?
I have gathered two of the best examples on the market in 1/18 scale to see if I could figure it out.
For the teutonic entry, we have Maisto’s 1/18 Premier Edition 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT in Magnetite Black Metallic over black with the silver trim. I bought it just yesterday from my local Mercedes-Benz dealership for $55, but I’m aware you can get it for less. I’m genuinely happy with the quality on this model. It feels much nicer than you’d expect from a Maisto.
In the American corner, we have the America’s V8 sweetheart, the Maisto 1/18 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51 Performance Pack (C7) in Arctic White over Adrenalin Red. I bought this at my local Target last week for only $15, but I’ve only found two cars there in the past month, so who knows what comes next.
I never imagined I’d be willing to pay $55 for a Maisto 1/18, but this Mercedes feels like every single penny spent was justified. Instead of waiting over a week to save $10, I drove down to my local Mercedes dealership and bought it from the friendly gentleman behind the parts counter yesterday afternoon.
Needless to say, the car is absolutely stunning. From the details and overall construction of the model, it feels more Norev than Maisto. I do, however, think the following pictures speak for themselves.
As a side note, I will point out that it took me a long time to warm up to the AMG GT as an SLS AMG shill, but it certainly won my heart.
But wait, there’s more! The spoiler actually comes up like on the real one, which I find rather neat.
As for the Corvette, this is my second Maisto 1/18 version of this casting, but the Laguna Blue over Kalahari version left my collection earlier this year. It’s still very nice, even when you compare it to the AMG GT. I was pleased to find this at the end of the car aisle at Target for the same price as the Costco ones. They also had a 2016 Camaro SS in Red Hot, which will get its own post whenever I go and get another 1/18 Mustang GT at Costco.
Overall, I’m very happy with both of them. They’ve proven to be great models, especially when you consider the price differences between them and the high end Norevs and AutoArts of the world. I love them all, but for the price, you can’t really beat these.
If you made me choose between them, my pick is the AMG GT hands down. As much as I love the Corvette, I can’t recall the last time I fell in love with a model so quickly.
If you happen to come across either, buy them if you can. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them as much as I’m enjoying mine.
