Finally finished this guy up yesterday and shot it today. This is the most extensive custom I’ve done at this point, and I’m pretty pleased with the result.
This started life as a Target Retro model, which I de-tampo’d except for the “396" and HW logo. I really liked the pink paint and didn’t want to mess with that. Plus, I had the white wheels from the M2 Camaro which went nicely with the pink.
Fitting those wheels required fairly extensive modifications to the chassis and interior pieces, especially for the wide meats on the back.
The car has also been lowered significantly from its stock ride height.
Based on recommendations, I dunked the chrome base in Simple Green overnight and that de-chromed it very nicely with zero effort. I shot the interior piece with flat black primer so I could detail it.
I spent a long time with GIS looking at Elkies to get the chrome trim right. It was hard duty, but I managed to retain my sanity in the face of pages and pages of awesome utes.
Since I was working on top of a factory paint finish, I had a hard time getting the chrome to actually stay put. Good old Sharpie actually works the best, although it still rubs off with not a lot of work (seems to stay better if let sit for a few days). I used an acrylic paint pen on the interior piece, since that was primed. If it weren’t for several false starts in that department, I probably would have finished last week.
Some comparison shots with the stock version:
Thanks for looking!
