I’m not sure what it is about this little cast that I like exactly, I think it’s a combination of factors like it’s acuracy and details, the fact it’s pretty old now and has a nice amount of patina, the memories of playing with its contemporaries in my childhood or maybe it’s my first memory of that ‘brand new car smell’. Yes, my parents purchased a new 265GL, just like this only slightly more browner and a V6 rather than the 4cyl car this cast is based on, sometime in the late ‘70s. They decided on one after a family from our small country town had a nasty rollover in one and all walked away pretty much unharmed. The consensus back then was that had they had the crash in any other car they wouldn’t have faired so well. So we got one, you know, just to be safe...

As I was born in 1973 I’m lucky enough to still remember when these Majorette casts were available everywhere from supermarkets, corner stores or fuel outlets and chemists, pretty much everywhere. They were as good as MBX or HW in feel and quality and seemed to mainly do accurate casts of actual cars, or at least that’s the ones I remember, never have really taken to fantasy casts.

I’m not sure when this Volvo cast was made but from what I can gather it would be between 1974 to 1976 at the latest based on its wheel style. The Volvo 200 series Estate didn’t come out until ‘75/’76 so unless the cast was released before the 1:1 (it’s happened before) I’d place the cast at 1976, as this wheel type was not used after that year apparently. It was difficult to find specific info on the wheels but I did find a brief discussion on Vintage British Die Cast Forum gave me some insight. Link at the bottom of the post.

Even the detail I most dislike about this series of wagon is present, the top of the rear door droop. I’ve always hated it! I understand that it’s the same door as used on the sedan but it really bugs me. Volvo did a pretty good job of hiding it by blacking out the window surrounds (which is a feature I like!) but once seen you cannot unsee it. Sorry if you never noticed it before and now it bugs you! Some people know about it and don’t care! I’m strange I guess know.

The metal headlights are a feature I like as well, even the grill details look right.

The suspension set up on these old Majorette casts is of the best of it’s era. They used a single wire bent into a kind of U shape (but with a flat base). The wire is visible through the hole in the centre of the base cast, also through the wheel arches in this shot. The U shape runs the along the length of the wheelbase and and the open end of the U is towards the front. This wire is secured in the centre and holds the axles close to the wheels. MBX mostly used a flat ribbon of spring steel which also works very well but for me the Majorette style is slightly better, in terms of on road feel. ;) It’s range of wheel movement is amazing and smooth in it’s opperation.
