Illustration for article titled Why you dont go looking for hawls at Savers, or How I nearly got hustled by a 3 year old.

For those of you not familiar with Savers, it’s a thrift store where people donate their old goods, and they re-sell them for dirt cheap. Most of the time it’s good stuff too. I’ve never gone there looking for cars before, but I know they had them, so I figured on lunch I’d give it a look. They take small toys and bunch them in bags that they hang on a wall. I saw a few bags for $2.99 with a bunch of beaten Hot Wheels, Maistos, and the errant Matchbox. Then, I spotted in a bag with a Captain America Pez Dispenser and Captain America mini Mr. Potato Head a still-in-package BTTF HW DeLorean! Also an Arkham Asylum Batmobile. As I’m holding this bag about to walk away to check out, a kid, probably 3 at the most, comes up and strikes up a conversation with me about how he likes toys and he wants to find a toy, but only the perfect toy will do. Then, he spots the Captain America Pez dispenser in the bag in my hand. “THAT’S WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR!” he says. Knowing this is the first time I’ve seen a HW BTTF DeLorean, let alone one still in the package, I thought about it for a second, and then handed it over, and told him he could have it. He stares in amazement at the Pez dispenser, and I felt good that I had made his day. Then he turns and looks at me and asks me for some money to buy it. After standing in stunned silence for a bit trying to process if he’d actually just asked me, or if his parent was nearby and it was directed at them, and finding no said parent in sight, I lean down and tell him “I’m sorry, but you’d better go ask your parent.” He replies with an “OK!” and runs off. I had to chuckle to myself as I walked away that not only did I make this kid’s day, but he also tried to extort me afterwards.
